Running Cline with DeepSeek V4 inside Cursor gives you a capable autonomous coding agent for under $1/month — compared to $20/month for Cursor Pro with native models. This guide covers the full setup: DeepSeek API key, Cline installation inside Cursor, configuration, model selection, and the common errors that break the integration.


Why This Combination

Cursor is a VS Code fork with deep AI integration. Cline is an open-source autonomous coding agent that runs as a VS Code extension — which means it installs and runs inside Cursor exactly like it does in VS Code.

The appeal of combining them:

What You Need

  • Cursor IDE (any version — Cursor is a VS Code fork and runs all VS Code extensions)
  • A DeepSeek API account with billing enabled

Step 1: Get a DeepSeek API Key

Go to platform.deepseek.com, create an account, and top up a minimum amount. DeepSeek requires a credit card or other payment method — the web chat interface is free, but the API is pay-as-you-go.

Once inside the dashboard, go to API Keys and create a new key. Copy it — you will need it in the next step.


Step 2: Install Cline in Cursor

Open Cursor and go to the Extensions panel (Ctrl+Shift+X / Cmd+Shift+X). Search for Cline and install it. The publisher is saoudrizwan (previously known as Claude Dev).

After installation, the Cline icon appears in the left sidebar. Click it to open the Cline panel.

List all TypeScript files in this project that export a default function.

If Cline responds with an accurate list, the connection is working.


Step 4: Add DeepSeek Natively to Cursor (Optional)

Cline handles autonomous multi-file agent tasks. For quick single-file edits and chat questions, you may also want Cursor's native chat to use DeepSeek — so you are not burning DeepSeek API credits through Cline for simple questions you could handle inline.

Open Cursor Settings (Cmd+, / Ctrl+,) and go to Models. Scroll to the OpenAI API Key section and toggle Override OpenAI Base URL. Set:

  • Base URL: https://api.deepseek.com/v1
  • API Key: Your DeepSeek API key

Then add a custom model with the name deepseek-v4-pro. Cursor will use this model in its native chat and agent panels.

Limitation: This routes Cursor's native chat through DeepSeek, but Cursor's Tab autocomplete still uses Cursor's own proprietary fast model — it does not switch to DeepSeek. Cursor's Background Agents also do not support DeepSeek V4 yet.

Use V4-Flash for:

  • Routine tasks with a clear scope (adding docstrings, generating test stubs, small single-file fixes)
  • High-frequency autocomplete — V4-Flash is fast and cheap enough for keystroke-level latency
  • Tasks where you can verify the output quickly and do not need reasoning

Use V4-Pro for:

  • Cline agent runs with multi-file scope
  • Debugging complex issues where reasoning quality matters
  • Refactors that touch more than 5 files
  • Any task where you cannot easily verify correctness at a glance

In Cline, switch models by clicking the model name in the top-right of the Cline panel and selecting Add Model to configure a second endpoint with V4-Flash.


Common Errors and Fixes

400 Bad Request during Cline agent tasks

This usually means DeepSeek V4-Pro's thinking mode is conflicting with how Cline passes back reasoning_content between tool calls. When reasoning content from one round is not passed back correctly in the next request, the API returns 400.

Fix: In Cline's model settings, disable thinking mode for DeepSeek V4-Pro. You will lose some reasoning quality on hard problems, but the agent loop will run reliably. Switch to a fresh chat session after changing this setting.

Model not found error

You are using a deprecated model ID. The old names deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner currently still work but retire on July 24, 2026. Use deepseek-v4-flash or deepseek-v4-pro instead.

Connection refused / timeout

Check that your base URL does not have a trailing slash and does not include /v1. The correct value for Cline is https://api.deepseek.com with no suffix.

Cline using too many tokens on simple tasks

Cline reads files to understand context before making changes. If the task scope is unclear, it reads more files than necessary. Fix this by making your task description more specific — name the files and functions you want changed instead of describing the problem at a high level. Avoid pointing Cline at entire directories with @folder unless necessary.

Every request through DeepSeek's API travels to DeepSeek's servers, which are located in China. For work projects with proprietary or sensitive code, this is a meaningful consideration.
